The Juntetsu Kenshi is a premium Japanese cutting shear in ATS-314 cobalt steel, with a sword-profile blade, an ultra-sharp convex edge, and a smooth ball-bearing tension system. It is available in 5.75 and 6.75 inch sizes for right-handed cutting.
Kenshi means swordsman in Japanese, and the name fits the blade. This shear sits at the top of the Juntetsu cutting range, pairing a premium cobalt steel with a strong, tapered sword-profile blade built for stylists who cut with power and want an edge that stays keen between sharpening visits.
ATS-314 is a cobalt-rich Japanese stainless steel valued for its hardness and long edge retention, hardened here to around 62-63 HRC. The higher hardness lets the blade take and hold an exceptionally sharp convex edge, which is why this steel sits above standard stainless options in the range.
The blade is ground to a slim, tapered sword profile that stays strong through the spine. That combination of a fine edge and a rigid body suits powerful cutting techniques, including deep slice cutting, slide cutting and dry cutting, where a thinner blade would flex.
The Juntetsu ball-bearing adjustment screw gives a smooth open-and-close action and holds its setting through repeated use, so the tension you set stays consistent through the day. Steady tension is what keeps a convex edge cutting cleanly rather than folding or pushing hair.
This model runs slightly longer in the blade than the number suggests. The 5.75 inch handles like a 6.0 inch in the hand, and the 6.75 inch handles like a 7.0 inch, so choose the size by the feel you are used to. The 5.75 inch suits all-round salon cutting, while the 6.75 inch gives extra reach and leverage for shear-over-comb and barbering.
What do the sizes mean, and why "feels like"?
The measurement is the actual blade length. Because of the blade profile and balance, the 5.75 inch feels like a 6.0 inch in use and the 6.75 inch feels like a 7.0 inch, so pick the size by the feel you already cut with.
How is ATS-314 different from VG-10?
ATS-314 carries more cobalt and is hardened a little higher, so it holds a sharp edge longer. It sits at the premium end of the range, above the VG-10 models.
Is this shear available for left-handed stylists?
This model is built as a right-handed scissor. If you need a true left-handed pair, contact our team before ordering and we will let you know the current options.
How do I care for a convex edge?
Wipe the blades clean and dry after each client and add a drop of shear oil at the pivot regularly. Convex edges should only be sharpened by a sharpener trained on convex blades, never on a flat-hone service.
Where is it made?
The Kenshi is made in Japan from Japanese ATS-314 steel.

Japan Scissors supports customers with clear shipping, return and warranty information. Eligible U.S. orders may ship from the U.S., Japan, Australia or approved supply partners depending on stock and the fastest reliable route.
Returns and exchanges are available within 30 days of delivery with return authorization. Approved U.S. returns are processed through our Laguna Beach, California returns address.
Warranty support is brand and model specific, and applies to confirmed manufacturing defects. Normal dulling, tension adjustment, wear, misuse, chemical damage and improper sharpening are not warranty defects.
Before judging sharpness, check the tension. New professional shears can feel loose or tight after shipping, and a small tension adjustment often fixes hair folding, pushing or uneven cutting.
Clean and dry the blades after use, oil the pivot area, and avoid cutting paper, fabric, plastic, wire or anything other than hair. Use a professional sharpener familiar with hair shears.
